Three drivers from Nallasopara who teamed up to con a Kolkata-based “Angadia” (courier) of Rs.50 lakh landed into the custody of the crime branch unit (Zone II) attached to the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police.

According to the police, they were informed by their counterparts from West Bengal about a case in which a Kolkata- based “angadia” was cheated of Rs.50 lakh by some conmen who impersonated the owner of India’s one of the top plywood manufacturers. Since the angadia was known to the owner, he fell prey to the trap and handed over the cash to the conmen. An offence under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita was registered against the accused at the Park Street police station in Kolkata on 4, March.

During investigations the police learnt about the presence of the suspects in Nallasopara. A team from the West Bengal police met DCP (crime)- Avinash Ambure, seeking help from the MBVV police in tracking the suspects. Ambure deputed personnel from the crime branch unit led by police inspector- Shahuraj Ranaware to assist their West Bengal counterparts. Based on inputs by network and electronic surveillance, the trio identified as- Syed Riyaz Kaazi (36), Wakab Javed Chandiwala (28) and Sachin Aryabhatt (32)-all residing in Nallasopara and working as drivers, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the crime.

After completing the legal formalities, the trio’s custody was handed over to the Anti-Rowdy Section (ARS)- a unit attached to the detective department which is headquartered in the Lal Bazar area of central Kolkata. The accused are said to be small-time handlers working for a professional gang in exchange for a small part of the swindled booty.

Angadias are people who run a parallel banking system by acting as couriers to facilitate discreet transfer of cash-generally from one state to another for which they charge a nominal fee.
