The mystery of ‘mysterious deaths’ has not yet been solved in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, where 15 people have lost their lives within 36 days. Seeing the seriousness of the cases of this unknown disease, Omar Abdullah’s government has ordered an investigation and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed for this. Government officials said on Thursday that they are closely monitoring the situation in Budhal village of Rajouri district.

Officials said that investigation and sample analysis have made it clear that these deaths were not due to any infectious disease caused by bacteria or viruses and there is no public health implication. No virus or viral disease has been confirmed in all the samples. The samples were tested in various reputed laboratories, including the National Institute of Virology (Pune), National Center for Disease Control (Delhi), and others.

The first incident of this mysterious disease occurred on 7 December 2024, when seven people from a family fell ill after a communal meal, leading to five deaths. Subsequently, on December 12, three of a family of nine died. More recently, on January 12, 2025, ten people from a family fell ill after another community meal, with six children having to be hospitalized.

According to officials, Mohammad Aslam’s 10-year-old daughter Zabina Kausar died at SMGS hospital in Jammu on Wednesday night, while the condition of her 15-year-old sister Yasmin Kausar remains critical. The government has announced several steps to find out the root cause of the disease.
