Musician Aurelio Martinez Suazo Among 12 Killed After Plane Carrying 17 Onboard Crashes Into Sea | X

Honduras, March 18: A tragic plane crash off the coast of Roatan Island, Honduras, has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, including famous Garifuna musician Aurelio Martinez Suazo. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday (March 17) at around 6:18 PM local time when a Jetstream aircraft operated by Honduran airline Lanhsa crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff from Juan Manuel Galvez Airport.

Details About The Plane Crash

The aircraft was carrying 15 passengers, two pilots and one flight attendant, making a routine trip from Roatan Island to La Ceiba Airport on the Honduran mainland. However, shortly after takeoff, the plane veered off course and plunged into the sea, sinking into deep waters.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, rescuing five survivors from the ocean. Unfortunately, 12 people including Aurelio Martinez did not survive.

Challenges in Rescue Operations

Rescue teams struggled to reach the wreckage due to difficult conditions, including 30 meters of underwater rocks and zero visibility for divers. Despite these obstacles, rescuers worked tirelessly to retrieve the victims and investigate the crash site.

Possible Cause of the Crash

Officials believe the crash may have been caused by an apparent mechanical failure in the British-made Jetstream 41 aircraft. However, a full investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause.

Government Response

Following the tragedy, Honduran President Xiomara Castro activated an emergency response committee to assist the victims and their families. The government has also expressed solidarity and support for those affected by the heartbreaking incident.

This crash has deeply shocked Honduras, especially with the loss of Aurelio Martinez, a beloved figure in the country’s Garifuna music community. The rescue operation is still underway to locate the other missing victims.
