Mumbai’s 1st Cable-Stayed Bridge In Reay Road Ready For Traffic Use, Likely To Open On Jan 26 2025 | Vijay Gohil FPJ
Mumbai: The city’s first cable-stayed road overbridge at Reay Road station is now ready to be fully operational, as per reports. This development marks a major achievement in the city’s infrastructure development. Completed in just two years, this six-lane bridge, which also includes a dedicated pedestrian footpath, has set a benchmark as one of the fastest-built road overbridges in the country.
The bridge is likely to be opened on January 26, 2025. The project, spearheaded by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), began on February 14, 2022, as part of a broader effort to replace ageing British-era bridges across Mumbai.

Details On The Engineering Marvel
The bridge, valued at Rs 2.73 billion, stretches 385 metres and is strategically designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. It includes two down ramps and a 1.52-kilometre stretch, specifically constructed to improve traffic flow and ensure enhanced safety for commuters. The Reay Road bridge not only offers greater vehicular capacity but also aims to streamline movement in one of Mumbai’s busiest corridors.
By August 2024, approximately 88% of the bridge construction was completed. However, progress was temporarily delayed due to the Maharashtra Assembly Elections held in November. Despite this, the bridge’s successful completion marks a major milestone for Mumbai’s infrastructure projects.

New Bridge Incorporates Several Advanced Features
The Reay Road Cable-Stayed Bridge incorporates several advanced features. It offers six wide lanes to accommodate vehicle traffic, alongside a dedicated footpath for pedestrians. Built in accordance with Indian Road Congress standards, the bridge ensures sufficient vertical clearance for rail traffic beneath it.
In addition to its functional design, the bridge features architectural LED lighting that enhances its aesthetics while improving visibility for night-time commuters. To bolster long-term safety, a bridge health monitoring system has been integrated, providing real-time data on the structure’s condition and ensuring its stability over time.
This bridge forms a critical component of Mumbai’s broader infrastructure transformation. Alongside ongoing projects in key areas such as Byculla, Dadar and Ghatkopar, it contributes to the city’s growing network of efficient and modern transport solutions. Importantly, the bridge will improve connectivity through the Barrister Nath Pai Road underpass, offering commuters a seamless and faster alternative to navigate the city’s busy roadways.
