Mumbai: Mumbai University on Wednesday announced the suspension of the first-year undergraduate admission process for 229 of its affiliated colleges for the academic year 2025–26, citing non-compliance with mandatory accreditation and governance norms.

The university said that these colleges had failed to secure or renew accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) or the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and had not established the mandatory College Development Committee (CDC) as required under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016.

Invoking sections 110(4) and 97 of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, the university stated, “Due to non-fulfilment of the required NAAC/NBA accreditation and reaccreditation norms, as well as the failure to establish the College Development Committee (CDC), the admission process for first-year students at 229 affiliated colleges has been suspended for the academic year 2025–26.”

The university added that despite repeated circulars, notifications, and reminders, the institutions had failed to comply with the requirements. “A fine of Rs10,000 has also been levied on these institutions,” it stated, noting that the decision was approved by the Management Council after serious deliberation.

According to the university, out of the 229 colleges, 156 failed to meet NAAC/NBA accreditation requirements, while 73 did not set up the CDC. “A list of all these colleges has been made available on the official website of Mumbai University,” the statement said, urging “all concerned students, parents, and stakeholders to take note.”

Section 97 of the Act mandates that every affiliated, autonomous, empowered college and recognised institution must constitute a CDC. Despite multiple reminders from the university, several colleges were found to be in breach of this statutory obligation. The Management Council took “serious cognisance” of this non-compliance.

Similarly, under Section 110(4) of the Act, every affiliated college is required to ensure accreditation or reaccreditation by NAAC or NBA. The university reiterated that it had issued “repeated circulars, notifications, and reminders” to this effect, but some colleges had not taken corrective steps.

The suspension is being seen as one of the most significant regulatory actions by Mumbai University in recent years, with implications for thousands of prospective students.
