Mumbai: Out of the total 257 active COVID-19 cases in India, 53 are registered in Mumbai alone. “However, the actual number of patients is very likely to be higher as the tests are not been conducted actively. While at present the other districts in Maharashtra show ‘zero’ cases, however, once tests are done more actively, the total of cases will rise,” said a civic health officer.

Dr Daksha Shah, BMC’s executive health officer said, “There is definitely a spike in COVID-19 cases in May. The exact number of cases is not known at present, but there is nothing to be concerned. The BMC collects weekly data.”

Recently, there were reports that two deaths (including a minor) due to Covid-19 were reported in BMC-run KEM hospital. However, the corporation on Monday clarified that the two patients died owing to serious comorbidities like seizures and cancer.

The statement added that the civic health department has enhanced its vigilance and increased special beds for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, in case of a spike.

Dr Akshay Dongardive, President of BMC MARD said, “We need the authorities to give a clear picture and the number of cases. There needs to be active screening, so that in case of a sudden spike in Covid cases, the doctors, especially the resident doctors, are prepared and the public is also aware can take self-precautionary measures.”

The rising number of COVID-19 patients is attributed to cross-state and international travel by citizens during the summer vacations. Countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have been registering a high number of COVID-19 cases lately.
