The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has achieved a significant milestone by completing the track laying work for the second phase of Metro 3, also known as the Aqua Line, ahead of the projected deadline. This phase connects the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Cuffe Parade and is expected to be fully operational by May 2025. The first phase of the project, which links Aarey Colony to BKC, commenced operations on October 7, 2024, providing commuters with a new, efficient mode of transportation.
A senior MMRCL official commented on the progress, stating, “The work to lay tracks along the stations in the second phase is 100 percent complete. We have also completed 90% of other works, with only a few stations, such as Girgaon and Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli, requiring attention due to various local issues.” The official added that although the project was initially targeted for completion by March 2025, it may extend to May due to additional testing requirements to ensure the system’s safety and reliability.
Metro 3, a 33.5-kilometer-long underground corridor, runs from Colaba to SEEPZ and includes 27 stations. Out of these, 26 stations are underground, with only one station at grade. This extensive network is designed to significantly reduce travel time across the city and alleviate the heavy traffic congestion Mumbai is known for.
The completion of track laying for the second phase marks a crucial step in the Metro 3 project. This phase will enhance connectivity between key commercial and residential areas, providing a seamless travel experience for thousands of commuters daily.
The Metro 3 project is part of a larger effort to develop Mumbai’s public transportation infrastructure, aimed at reducing the city’s reliance on road transport and cutting down on pollution. Once fully operational, the Aqua Line is expected to carry over 1.5 million passengers per day, significantly easing the burden on existing road and rail networks.
Residents and businesses in the areas served by the Metro 3 line are eagerly anticipating its completion. Improved connectivity is expected to boost economic activity, reduce travel time, and enhance the overall quality of life in Mumbai. The project has already generated considerable employment opportunities during its construction phase and is poised to create more jobs once it becomes operational.
