The Esplanade Court has convicted a 29-year-old resident of Sion Chunabhatti, Kamran Khan, for threatening to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The accused, who was arrested by Azad Maidan police in 2023, has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment under Sections 505(2) and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
On November 20, 2023, Khan called the Azad Maidan police and threatened to kill PM Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath, claiming that representatives of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim had offered him ₹5 crores to carry out the assassination. Minutes later, when an officer attempted to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) with Azad Maidan police, they had already tracked and arrested Khan.
The defence, representing Khan, objected to the chargesheet, arguing that his voice samples were not verified before filing. However, the court dismissed this claim, citing verification of his location and confirmation by the nodal officer. The defence further claimed that Khan was mentally disturbed at the time of the incident. However, the court rejected this argument, noting that there was no medical evidence to support the claim. It also pointed out that despite multiple court appearances, Khan never informed the court of any mental health issues.
The court strongly condemned Khan’s actions, stating: “The accused has put the entire police force on high alert by threatening to assassinate the Prime Minister of our country and the Chief Minister of a state. His actions were aimed at destabilizing society, and such repeated offenses cannot be tolerated. The accused does not deserve any kind of sympathy.” The court found Khan guilty under Sections 505(2) and 506(2) of the IPC and sentenced him to two years of rigorous imprisonment.
