The much-delayed Mumbai-Goa Highway is set to be completed by the end of 2026, according to Public Works Minister Shivendra Raje Bhosale. He stated that key pending works, including the Mangaon-Indapur stretch, work of the collapsed flyover at Bahadur Sheikh area in Chiplun, and the Sangameshwar-Lanja stretch, have been reviewed, and orders have been issued to expedite their completion.
The 439-kilometre Mumbai-Goa Highway has faced multiple delays over the years. The construction work of the highway becomes talking point during rainy season. Huge traffic jams and potholes riddle roads have made Konkan residence difficult.
Bhosale said that while work in Sindhudurg district is complete, road-widening efforts in Raigad and Ratnagiri districts have been plagued by obstacles, including land acquisition issues, environmental clearances, contractor inefficiency, legal disputes and last-minute changes in construction plans. Former public works minister Ravindra Chavan had visited the highway 17 times to monitor progress and had assured that the road would be opened for traffic before Ganeshotsav 2024. However, the collapse of a girder on the Chiplun flyover further delayed the project.
Now, under the Mahayuti government led by Devendra Fadnavis, Bhosale has taken charge of the Public Works Department and personally inspected the incomplete sections of the highway. During meetings with officials, he addressed major bottlenecks, including the Chiplun flyover collapse, issues in Kashedi Ghat, traffic congestion at Wadkhal Naka, and the need for alternate service roads and underpasses.
