Mumbai: One of India’s most prestigious trains, the 12951/12952 Mumbai Central – New Delhi Tejas Rajdhani Express, popularly known as the Mumbai Rajdhani, marks its 53rd anniversary on May 17, 2025. Launched in 1972, the train has become a symbol of speed, comfort, and status on the Indian Railways network.

To mark the train’s 53rd ‘birthday’, Western Railway is organizing a small event at Mumbai Central station on Saturday, in collaboration with frequent commuters and rail fans. The celebration will be a tribute to its legacy, recognizing the contributions of staff and loyal passengers who have made this journey memorable through the years.

“The Mumbai–Delhi Rajdhani Express was the second Rajdhani train introduced in India, after the Howrah Rajdhani. Starting as a weekly service, it quickly gained popularity for its speed and reliability, prompting Indian Railways to increase its frequency. Over the years, it has evolved into a daily service, reflecting the ever-growing demand on the busy Mumbai–Delhi corridor” said an official of WR.

Currently, the train covers the 1,384 km journey between Mumbai Central (MMCT) and New Delhi (NDLS) in approximately 15 hours and 35 minutes, with an average speed of nearly 90 km/h and a maximum permissible speed of 130 km/h. The Mumbai Rajdhani is often given top priority on the railway network, ensuring minimal delays and smooth operation.

“The train has long been viewed as a benchmark for luxury and punctuality in Indian Railways. With a modern Tejas rake, world-class interiors, upgraded onboard catering, and enhanced passenger amenities, it remains a preferred choice for business and elite travelers alike” further added official.

Its route connects major Indian states — Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi — making it a lifeline for millions over the decades.

Birth of Another Rajdhani: August Kranti Express

The growing passenger demand led to the introduction of another prestigious service between Mumbai and Delhi. In 1991, a new AC Express with similar specifications was introduced between the two cities. It was formalized on January 1, 1992, as the Mumbai – Hazrat Nizamuddin August Kranti Rajdhani Express, offering passengers more options while maintaining high service standards.

While Vande Bharat Express trains have recently taken the spotlight for their tech-forward design and semi-high-speed capabilities, the Rajdhani Express continues to command a special place in the hearts of Indian travelers.

The blend of luxury, history, and unmatched punctuality makes traveling on the Rajdhani a prestigious experience, even today.
