After much anticipation, the ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road (MCRP), linking the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) to Marine Drive, will open for traffic starting Monday, from 7 am to 12 am. Additionally, the three interchanges connecting areas like Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, and Lotus Junction will be inaugurated on Sunday by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. However, the work on the promenade and three underground parking facilities is expected to be completed by December 2025.
Previously, travelers from South Mumbai had to travel north via the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL), land at Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg in Worli, and then continue to the coastal road. With the completion of the southbound arm of the coastal road connector, travelers can now directly move from the sea link to Marine Drive, ensuring a seamless journey from north to south. The part of the coastal road being inaugurated spans 827 meters, including 699 meters over the sea and 128 meters for the approach road. To build this bridge, approximately 2,400 metric tons of Bow Arch String Girder were installed. The girder is 143 meters long, 27 meters wide, and 31 meters high.
As part of the MCRP, beautification of the median across an area of 4.35 kilometers, or 4.83 hectares, from Priyadarshini Park to Worli will be carried out by M/s Tata Sons Limited. This beautification will be funded through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund. The inauguration of this beautification will take place on January 26 with tree planting, in the presence of the chief minister. The remaining part of the coastal road the 7.5-km continuous promenade, stretching from Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy to the Worli end of the sea link, is expected to be ready by May.
The BMC has cancelled the underground parking project at Amarsons in Breach Candy. While, the construction of three parking facilities along the Coastal Road at NSCI Worli, near BinduMadhav Thackeray Chowk, and opposite Dr. Annie Besant Road in Worli is expected to be completed by the end of December. The civic body has recently invited an expression of interest (EoI) from private and public limited companies for the development of approximately 70 hectares of open spaces along the Coastal Road, a project expected to take another 3-4 years to complete. The 10.58-km coastal road stretches from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the BWSL.
