As Makar Sankranti approaches, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has issued an important safety advisory urging the public to exercise caution while flying kites during the festive season. “The kites soaring high in the sky, always brings joy to both children and adults. However, there are potential risks associated with kite flying, especially when kites or their strings come into contact with electric poles, transformers, or power lines,” a MSEDCL officer said.

MSEDCL officials pointed out that the widespread network of electricity infrastructure in both urban and rural areas increases the likelihood of accidents, particularly during Makar Sankranti when kite flying is at its peak. The company has advised people to maintain a safe distance from electrical equipment while flying kites and to avoid flying them near power lines or transformers.

To minimize the risk of accidents, MSEDCL recommends flying kites in open fields away from power lines. People should also refrain from attempting to retrieve kites or strings that get caught on electrical poles or wires, as the friction between power lines can cause short circuits, which may lead to injuries or property damage.

The advisory also cautioned against climbing rooftops or transformers to remove kites entangled in power lines. Additionally, people are urged not to throw stones tied with ropes to try and dislodge kites from electrical wires. Another important safety tip is to avoid using metal-coated kite strings, as they can conduct electricity and increase the risk of electric shock when they come into contact with power systems.

In the event of an emergency, MSEDCL has recommended contacting the nearest branch office immediately to facilitate the disconnection of the power supply and ensure prompt assistance. The company’s customer service center can be reached at the toll-free numbers 1800-233-3435 or 1800-212-3435 for further support.
