The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) began their IPL 2025 journey with a thrilling 4-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI). Among the many exciting moments, one that stood out was MS Dhoni’s heartfelt appreciation for debutant spinner Vignesh Puthur, who made a sensational entry into the tournament with three key wickets.

After the game, the legendary MS Dhoni took a moment to acknowledge Vignesh’s stellar debut. Placing a hand on the young bowler’s shoulder, Dhoni commended him for his exceptional performance, even giving him a supportive pat on the back.

Vignesh Puthur’s debut was nothing short of remarkable. As a left-arm wrist spinner, he proved his mettle by dismantling CSK’s top order. He started with wicket of CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in his very first over. To add to his feat, he cleverly outfoxed Shivam Dube with a deceptive delivery before claiming Deepak Hooda’s wicket, making his first match in the IPL an unforgettable one. The left-arm spinner finished with figures of 3/32 in his 4 overs.

About Vignesh Puthur

Vignesh Puthur is the son of an Autorickshaw driver who never played senior-level cricket for Kerala. Having started the journey as a medium pace bowler, Puthur turned to spin on the suggestion of Kerala cricketer Mohammed Sherif, a decision that changed the course of his career.

The youngster toiled hard in local leagues and college tournaments, Puthur’s performances for St. Thomas College in the Kerala College Premier T20 League and a brief stint at Jolly Rovers Cricket Club caught the attention of Mumbai Indians. Despite modest numbers in the Kerala Cricket League where he took just two wickets in three matches MI’s scouts saw potential in him. The franchise picked him up at the IPL 2025 mega auction for ₹30 lakh.
