Two great Indian cricket players, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, played together for the Indian team for 11 years. Kohli had stepped into international cricket under Dhoni’s captaincy, while Dhoni played his last international match led by Kohli in 2019. The relationship between these two turned into a strong friendship over time, but despite this, the streak of a senior-junior remains intact even today.
Special relationship between Dhoni and Kohli
Former captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) MS Dhoni He spoke openly on his and Virat Kohli’s relationship in an interview to Jio Hotstar. They said,
“There has been a good relationship between me and Virat from the beginning. He was a player who was not satisfied with just 40-60 runs, but was hungry to stay not out by scoring 100 runs. He continuously improved his batting, fitness and willingness of sports, so that he could establish himself as a great player.”
Dhoni further explained that he and Kohli spoke many things on the field and outside, which led to a better understanding between them.
“We both discussed a lot about cricket. I gave him an honest opinion, like ‘it should have taken this risk’ or ‘You could have avoided it for one over’. Our relationship started as a captain and young player, but over time we became good friends. However, I still feel that I still feel that there is a streak of senior and junior between us, even though we both are not the captains.”
A guide than a friend
The most important turn in Dhoni and Kohli’s relationship took place when Virat Kohli left the T20 captaincy in 2021, resigned from Test captaincy in 2022 and was removed from ODI captaincy. In that difficult time, Kohli got only one player’s message – and that was MS Dhoni.
Kohli once told,
“When I left the Test captaincy, I only got Dhoni’s message. It shows that when you are respected for someone in your heart and you are honest with them, that relationship is beyond showing.”
