Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Issuing directives isn’t enough, they should be enforced too, a division bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court said while issuing a notice to the state government on a petition seeking a ban on DJs and loudspeakers.
The principal bench of Jabalpur, comprising Chief Justice Suresh Kait and Justice Vivek Jain, asked the state government to give a detailed reply to the petition. It also sought to know on Tuesday which initiatives have been taken to ban high-decibel DJs in the state.
The next hearing is on March 21. The petition, filed by advocate Amitabh Gupta, states that high-decibel DJ equipment causes health hazards, communal tension, and riots.
It says DJs and loudspeakers are used in social and religious functions, as well as in religious processions, but their use leads to noise pollution causing health hazards to vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and senior citizens.
Their use can also lead to law & order problems, it says. Speaking to the Free Press, advocate Gupta said, “I had filed the PIL in the HC which directed the state government for a ban on DJ on January 22, 2025.
The government was to file a reply. In today’s hearing, the HC asked the state government about the initiatives taken to restrict the use of DJs. As the government could not file its reply, the HC has given it till March 21 to do so.”
