Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): The MP Transco (Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company) has initiated a ‘Roko-Toko’ campaign across the state, including Ujjain to prevent potential accidents caused by flying kites with Chinese string (manjha) near transmission lines and to raise public awareness for safety.

MP Transco has written to Ujjain district administration requesting a ban on the use of Chinese string and designation of areas near transmission lines as sensitive and dangerous zones where the risk of accidents is highest.

Chief engineer Sandeep Gaikwad stated that in Ujjain, which has several kite-flying hotspots, efforts are being made to personally engage with citizens and alert them through posters, banners and public address systems.

The campaign aims to ensure public safety and prevent unnecessary disruptions to power supply. Recently, incidents of kites with Chinese string getting entangled in transmission lines in Ujjain and nearby areas caused power outages and injuries to kite flyers. However, significant loss of life and property was avoided.

In Ujjain region, areas like Pratap Nagar, Nausarabad Colony, Mahavir Nagar, Panwasa, Pandayakhedi, Sethi Nagar and Bageshwar Dham are highly sensitive to potential accidents caused by Chinese string. In these areas, it is crucial to exercise caution, vigilance and awareness to avoid any contact with transmission lines.

Chinese string is made of various chemicals and metals, which make the string a good conductor of electricity. It poses a risk to kite flyers, as coming into contact with it can be fatal. If the string gets entangled in transmission lines, it can lead to widespread power outages and loss of life and property.
