Jabalpur: A statement made by Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda has stirred controversy, with opposition leaders accusing him of undermining the role of the Indian Army.
During a Civil Defense Volunteers training program in Jabalpur, Devda credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi solely for India’s response to terrorism, prompting sharp criticism for what many see as a disrespectful remark towards the armed forces.
‘Army Bows at PM Modi’s Feet’: Devda’s Statement Triggers Backlash
Speaking at the event, Deputy CM Devda lauded PM Modi’s leadership in responding to terrorism, referencing the recent attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. “We will not rest until we root out those terrorists and those who shelter them who have wiped out the vermilion of our sisters,” he said. He went on to add, “We should thank Prime Minister Modi ji. The entire country and our army bow down to his feet. The befitting reply given by Modi ji, no amount of praise would be enough for it.”

The remarks, particularly the suggestion that the army bows before the PM, have drawn allegations of politicising the armed forces and minimising the sacrifices of soldiers. Opposition leaders argued that such statements blur the lines between political leadership and institutional respect for the military.
Congress Calls Devda’s Remarks ‘Insulting’
The Congress party strongly condemned Devda’s comments on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), calling them “very cheap and shameful.” The party stated, “This is an insult to the valour and courage of the army. When the whole country is bowing in front of the army today, BJP leaders are expressing their low thinking about our brave army.”

The opposition has demanded Devda’s resignation and an official apology from the BJP.
