Motilal Oswal, one of the most prominent names in the world of finance and business in India, found itself in a bit of controversy when the financial services company was fined by the market regulator Security Exchange Board Of India or SEBI.

The Mumbai-based company was handed a fine of Rs 7 lakh.

The market regulator pointed out violations made by Motilal Oswal that contravened brokerage laws in the country. As a result of this news, the company shares have been at Dalal Street.

A statement issued through an exchanged filing issued on January 30 by Motilal Oswal We wish to inform the Exchanges that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (“SEBI”), jointly with Stock Exchanges and Depositories, has conducted an inspection of the Company for the period of April 01, 2021 to June 30, 2022. Pursuant to the said inspection and submissions made by the Company, the SEBI has passed its Order dated January 30, 2025.”

It further read, “In this regard and pursuant to the provisions of Regulation 30 read with Para A of Part A of Schedule III of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015 (as amended from time to time) (“Listing Regulations”), we wish to inform the Exchanges that the SEBI has raised certain observations pertaining to retail business during the inspection which were operational in nature and issued the said Order wherein a Penalty of Rs. 7,00,000/- has been imposed on the Company.”

When it comes to the company shares, they closed with a decline of over 3 per cent on Thursday, January 30, after making major gains, again by over 3 per cent on the day before that, on Wednesday, January 29.

On Friday, January 31, the trend of decline continued. However, the intensity of the slump reduced.

While the shares hit the low of Rs 622.40 per share, it made some recovery later on.

At the time of writing, the shares of Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd continued to trade in red. The decline stood at 1.42 per cent or Rs 9.20. This has taken the overall to Rs 636.60.
