Monthly Unepsyment: India’s first monthly unemployment rate report, 5.1% unemployment recorded in April 2025

News India Live, Digital Desk: Monthly Unnemployment: The government said on Thursday that the labor force participation rate (LFPR) in the current weekly status (CWS) was 55.6 percent among persons aged 15 and above during April, LFPR for rural areas was 58 percent and LFPR in urban areas was 50.7 percent for urban areas.

According to the new series based on the monthly data released by the Ministry of Statistics, these figures have also included rural employment data for the first time, which has increased the scope of coverage.

The unemployment rate (UR) in urban areas was 6.4 percent during the October-December 2024 of the old series compiled on a quarterly basis.

The LFPR in CWS for men aged 15 years and above in rural and urban areas during April was 79 percent and 75.3 percent respectively, while LFPR for women aged 15 years and above in rural areas was 38.2 percent.

In rural areas, the labor population ratio (WPR) in CWS was 55.4 percent among individuals aged 15 and above. According to the data, WPR was 47.4 percent among the same age groups in urban areas during April, while the total WPR at the country level was 52.8 percent.

During the month, WPR was 36.8 percent and 23.5 percent respectively for women aged 15 years and above in rural and urban areas, and the overall women of the same age group at the country level were seen 32.5 percent.

Considering the need for creation of high frequency labor force indicators with advanced coverage, the sample method of periodic labor force survey (PLFS) has been improved since January 2025.

The revised PLFS design envisages anticipation of major employment and unemployment indicators (labor force participation rate, labor population ratio and unemployment) on monthly basis for rural and urban areas at the All India level CWS.

Monthly results are planned to release PLFS as a monthly bulletin. The current monthly bulletin is the first in the series for April 2025 months.

Since January 2025, a rotational panel sampling design has been adopted at PLFS for both rural and urban areas. In this rotational panel plan, each selected house is visited four times in four consecutive months – with a first tour program and the other three times again. The plan of rotation ensures that 75 percent of the first phase sampling units (FSU) are matched between two consecutive months.
