IMD monsoon-2025 forecast : The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that this year the monsoon in India will start 4 days ago. The monsoon usually starts from June 1, but this year the monsoon is likely to reach Kerala coast on 27 May. In 2009, the monsoon reached Kerala on 23 May.

Four years figures on the entry of monsoon in the country

Last year, the monsoon entered Kerala on 30 May. While the monsoon in 2023 reached 8 June, 2022 on 29th and 3 June in 2021, while in 2020 the monsoon arrived on 1 June. The southwest monsoon usually begins in Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by 8 July. Also, the monsoon goes back from Northwest India around 17 September and from the rest of the country by 15 October.

Expectation of more rainfall than normal

The Meteorological Department has predicted more than normal rainfall in 2025. Usually the El Nino effect causes less rainfall than normal, although this time its effect is denied. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, said, “This year the country is expected to receive more than normal rainfall during the four -month monsoon season.” During this period, 105 percent rainfall is expected, which is 87 percent more than the average rainfall.

Monsoon will reach Kerala from Nicobar Islands in 10 days

The Indian Meteorological Department has clearly stated that, ‘Early or late entry of monsoon in Kerala does not mean much or less rainfall in the country, it also includes many other effects.’ Recently, the Meteorological Department had said that this year the monsoon could move forward on 13 May only in the southern Andaman Sea, parts of the Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands. This usually happens around May 20, although this time it is happening a week ago. The monsoon usually takes 10 days to reach Kerala from Nicobar Islands.

Monsoon is very important for the country’s economy.

According to the Meteorological Department, 96 percent to 104 percent rainfall is considered normal. Less than 90 percent of the rainfall is considered less and between 90 and 95 percent rainfall is considered less than normal. The monsoon is very important for the agricultural sector of India. 42 percent of the country’s population is dependent on agriculture for its livelihood and the region contributes 18 percent to the development of the country. Monsoon rain is also important for filling the country’s reservoirs and power generation.
