Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s new film ‘L2: Empuran’ has been engulfed in political controversies as soon as it is released. It is being accused of touching the subjects related to the 2002 Gujarat riots and misuse of central investigative agencies. While some leaders of Congress and Left parties have appreciated the film, the Sangh Parivar and right -wing organizations have criticized it as “anti -Hindu”.

Why did the controversy over the film?

The ruling Left of Kerala, the democratic front (LDF) and the opposition Congress, praised the film, saying it highlights the “agenda” of right -wing politics. On the other hand, right -wing groups allege that the film is trying to discredit Hinduism.

Congress support

  • Kerala Youth Congress President and Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkutthil termed the protest against Mohanlal and director Prithviraj Sukumaran inappropriate.

  • He said, “Just as ‘KGF’ and ‘Pushpa’ raised their regional identity, ‘Emopuran’ has shown the culture of Kerala.”

  • Congress leaders accused those who supported ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Kerala Story’ of adopting double standards.

Objection to right wing organizations

  • Platforms like ‘Sanatan Dharma’ and ‘Hindu Post’ strongly criticized the film as “anti -Hindu”.

  • Many right -wing organizations said that director Prithviraj Sukumaran has cheated Mohanlal and his fans.

  • However, the BJP’s Kerala unit removed itself from the controversy. BJP general secretary P. Sudhir said, “The film will run its way and the party will do its job.”

Film hit with record breaking earnings

Despite the controversies, ‘L2: Emoran’ is performing brilliantly at the box office.

  • On the very first day, it earned a record of the Malayalam film with the biggest opening in Kerala by earning 22 crores.

  • It found 4,500 shows on 746 screens in Kerala, which is a record so far.

Script writer reacted to controversy

The script writer of the film Murali Gopi, who is considered director Prithviraj, considers his “co-producer”, said that “Everyone has the right to interpret the film’s own interpretation.”
He also said that “the film depicts the social and political situation of the country, and differences on it are natural.”

Controversy and political rhetoric about the film may be released, but ‘L2: Empuran’ has made its place among the audience.
