After much anticipation and hype, L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, released in theatres on Thursday, but it fell prey to piracy within hours of its release. The film is now available to stream and download on malicious websites, causing a big blow to the makers.

According to reports, Empuraan was leaked by miscreants on several notorious piracy websites, including Filmyzilla, Tamilrockerz, Movierulez, Telegram and others. To make things worse, the film is available on the torrent websites in high-definition quality.

This comes despite multiple requests by Empuraan makers and filmmakers in general to protect their films from piracy.

The makers of Empuraan are yet to issue an official statement on the fiasco.

The film, which has been mounted on a massive scale, might incur heavy losses due to the leak, as it will discourage people from witnessing the film in theatres.

Earlier, several other south films, including Thandel, Game Changer, Vidaamuyarchi, and others too fell prey to online piracy, causing a dent to their box office collections

L2: Empuraan has been directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, and it stars Mohanlal in the lead. It is a prequel of the 2019 film, Lucifer, which had shattered all records at the box office upon its release.

Besides Mohanlal, Prithviraj, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas and Indrajith Sukumaran will also be seen reprising their roles from Lucifer in Empuraan.

Empuraan has already been declared a hit by trade analysts as the film has grossed around Rs 20 crore through advanced bookings alone. According to the makers, Lucifer and Empuraan are part of a trilogy and the details of the third and final installment of the trilogy has been kept under wraps.
