Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif shared his thoughts about Jasprit Bumrah taking over Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma. The Team India skipper’s captaincy has come under immense criticism during Border Gavaskar Series against Australia.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) Kaif wrote, “BCCI should think twice before appointing Bumrah as full time captain. He needs to solely focus on taking wickets and staying fit. Added leadership responsibility, getting carried away in heat of moment can result in injuries and shorten an outstanding career.Don’t kill the golden goose.”
Kaif also spoke about how Bumrah will have fitness issues in his career since the pace spearhead is prone to injuries, it won’t be the right choice for him to become the skipper.
He said,”Why there is an injury, it has happened to him in the past as well. If you remember, he didn’t play in the Mumbai Test against New Zealand. WTC points were on the line there as well, but he was told to take rest and recover. There will be fitness issues in his career, the way he bowls, takes just four walks, and it’s not easy to bowl at 145 or 150 kmph,”
Bumrah set to miss majority of white ball cricket
Jasprit Bumrah could miss majority of the white-ball series against England, beginning with the T20I leg on January 22. With the Champions Trophy also looming, the selectors are likely to preserve the right-arm speedster for the eight-team tournament, allowing him enough time to recover from the back injury, given his presence will be vital.
The 31-year-old didn’t bowl in the fourth innings of the Sydney Test against Australia as back spasm prevented him from bowling any further in the game.
Having precisely bowled 151.2 overs in the five-Test series Down Under, the sources reported by the PTI are yet to ascertain the magnitude of Bumrah’s injury. In case of Grade 1 injury, it will be 2-3 weeks before he returns to bowl. If it’s a Grade 2 injury, the recovery time will go up to six weeks, while Grade 3, most severe in nature, requires three months of rest and rehabilitation programmes.
