Central Government Lok Sabha: I introduced a bill amending the Waqf Act, which led to a sharp noise between the ruling party and the opposition. The opposition India coalition opposed the bill, while the NDA parties supported the bill. The bill was introduced by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and after discussion it was passed in the Lok Sabha and will be introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. However, the central government will not have to face much problems in the Rajya Sabha. JDU, TDP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) and NCP will be supported in NDA.

What is the game of number in Rajya Sabha?
The upper house of Parliament has 236 members in the Rajya Sabha. BJP’s number is 98 in this. If we look at the alliance, the number of NDA members is about 115. If we also add six nominated members who usually vote in favor of the government, then the NDA figure reaches 121, which is more than 119 more than 119 required to pass the bill.
The Rajya Sabha has 27 members of the Congress and 58 members of other constituents of the Indian block. Overall, the opposition has 85 MPs. The Rajya Sabha has 9 members of YSR Congress, 7 of BJD and 4 members of AIADMK. There are 3 members including small parties and independents who are neither in the ruling coalition nor in the opposition alliance.
Kiran Rijiju introduced this bill in the Lok Sabha on 8 August 2024, which was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) after the opposition’s uproar. Following the report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee headed by Jagdambika Pal, the cabinet approved the amended bill.
