Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has intensified its drive to enforce the use of Marathi language in government and private establishments. Recently, a bank employee in Pune district’s Lonavala was thrashed by the workers of the Raj Thackeray-led party for not using Marathi in daily business transactions. The video of this incident has gone viral on social media.

As seen in the video, the MNS workers are seen speaking with the manager of Maharashtra Bank’s Lonavala branch. They are insisting on the usage of Marathi in daily business transactions. “Marathi is the official language of the state. If you can’t speak in Marathi, how will the customers of the bank complete their transactions? If all of your employees speak in Hindi, how will the customers understand? Also, all the boards in the bank are in English, how will common people understand? 99 per cent residing here speak in Marathi,” the workers are heard arguing with the manager.
During this discussion, a Marathi-speaking employee intervened, arguing that customer services were not affected by the use of Hindi. This statement angered the MNS workers, who then thrashed him and threw him out of the manager’s cabin.
In another incident, MNS workers created a stir at a Bank of Maharashtra branch in Ambernath following a dispute over the use of the Marathi language. The controversy arose when the bank manager, who did not speak Marathi, engaged in an argument with MNS workers regarding the language. This led to a protest by the party members inside the bank.
The party’s aggressive stance follows MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s recent speech at a Gudi Padwa rally, where he reiterated his party’s stand on Marathi being made mandatory for official purposes.
