The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been honored with two prestigious national awards at the Build India Infra Awards 2025. Recognized for its dedication to sustainable, inclusive, and citizen-centric infrastructure development, MMRDA’s achievements were celebrated at a grand ceremony in New Delhi.

The awards event was organized by the Build India Foundation, with support from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The distinguished gathering was graced by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, with the awards being presented by Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog. The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and infrastructure experts to recognize outstanding contributions to the nation’s development.

Surya Regional Water Supply Project: Securing Water for the Future

One of MMRDA’s award-winning projects, the Surya Regional Water Supply Scheme, was recognized for its transformative impact on public health, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. This crucial initiative ensures a reliable supply of clean and potable drinking water, addressing the long-standing issue of water scarcity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Designed to supply 403 million liters per day (MLD) of drinking water to approximately 30 lakh residents, the project serves as a lifeline for the western suburbs of Mumbai. Its recognition highlights the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development and improving citizens’ quality of life.

Mumbai Metro Lines 2A & 7: Transforming Urban Transport

In the Urban Transport category, MMRDA’s Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 were awarded the Impact Award for their role in revolutionizing urban connectivity. These metro lines have significantly improved transportation efficiency, reduced congestion, and enhanced commuter experiences in one of India’s busiest metropolitan corridors.

Spanning over 35 kilometers, the fully elevated metro lines feature 30 strategically located stations, designed to integrate seamlessly with other metro and rail networks. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of providing modern, sustainable, and multimodal transport solutions to millions of daily commuters.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded MMRDA’s success, stating: “These prestigious national awards reaffirm Maharashtra’s position as a front-runner in visionary infrastructure development. From addressing basic human needs like safe drinking water to offering world-class public transport solutions, these achievements demonstrate our focus on inclusive, sustainable, and technologically advanced progress. I congratulate MMRDA and every stakeholder involved in these transformative projects.”

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde echoed this sentiment, saying: “These accolades reflect the Government’s commitment to improving the lives of common citizens. The Surya Water Supply Scheme and Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 are not just infrastructure projects—they are lifelines for millions. They represent our dedication to balanced regional development, environmental care, and future-focused planning. MMRDA has made us all proud.”

Expressing gratitude, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee (IAS), Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, remarked: “It is a moment of immense pride for the entire MMRDA team. These awards acknowledge not just the infrastructure, but the lives transformed by these initiatives. We remain committed to building smart, inclusive, and sustainable infrastructure that improves quality of life while protecting our ecological heritage.”
