Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced ₹5 Crore Cash Prize For D Gukesh after the youngster won the World Chess Championship on Thursday in Singapore. At just 18, Gukesh defeated China’s Ding Liren in the final game to secure the prestigious title and also became the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to achieve the feat.

Gukesh secured the title with a stunning win in the final game, capitalizing on Ding’s mistake to claim the crown at 7.5 points, in what commentators called a major upset. The players entered the decisive 14th game tied at 6.5 points each. Playing with the black pieces, Gukesh maintained relentless pressure, capitalising on a mistake by Ding on the 53rd move
How much prize money did Gukesh win for winning the title?
The 2024 World Chess Championship boasts a total prize pool of $2.5 million. According to FIDE’s rules, players are awarded $200,000 (₹1.68 crore approximately) for each win, with the remaining prize money to be split equally between the two finalists.
Gukesh triumphed in three games (Games 3, 11, and 14), earning $600,000 (₹5.04 crore approximately) from his victories, while Ding secured $400,000 (₹3.36 crore) for winning Games 1 and 12.
The remaining $1.5 million will be evenly divided between the two players. In total, Gukesh earned $1.35 million (₹11.34 crore approximately), while Ding took home $1.15 million (₹9.66 crore approximately).
