New Delhi : Belgium Police has arrested Mehul Choksi, a diamond merchant who cheated Rs 15,000 crore from India. Currently, preparations for his extradition are going on. Meanwhile, Mehul Choksi approached the Belgian court citing the disease. Choksi filed a bail plea in a Belgian court. However, the Belgian court has given him a major blow. According to the information received, a Belgian court has rejected Choksi’s bail plea.
Mehul Choksi’s lawyer Vikal Chaurasia filed a bail petition in the court. However, during the hearing, a bench of judges refused to grant bail. Keeping his case in court, Choksi cited his poor health. He said that he wants to live with his family. This should give me bail. He said that Choksi has said that he is ready to accept any condition of the court.
According to media reports, Mehul Choksi was arrested on 12 April 2025 in Belgium. India has started preparing for Choksi’s extradition. India has also sent a formal request letter to Belgium for this. When Choksi was arrested, he was preparing to flee Belgium on the pretext of treatment. At the same time, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal told the media that Choksi was arrested in Belgium at the request of the Government of India.
The Government of India is currently in touch with the Belgian government to prosecute Choksi in India. But Choksi has been continuously opposing its extradition to India. This is making it difficult for the Government of India to bring them back to the country. Due to this, investigative agencies are adopting a legal strategy to ensure that Choksi remains in custody and its extradition process starts soon.
13 thousand crore scam with nephew
Mehul Choksi along with her nephew Nirav Modi did a big scam in Punjab National Bank. Both are accused of cheating more than Rs 13 crore from the bank. Both of them were absconding by the Government of India.
India absconded in 2018
Choksi gained citizenship of Antigua in 2017 and fled from India after the scam in 2018. PNB later launched an investigation against Choksi in a Rs 15,000 crore scam. In 2018, Interpol issued a red corner notice against Choksi. Mehul Choksi escaped from Antigua in 2021 and settled in Dominica. Later in 2025 it was reported that he was in Belgium.
