The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti has expressed deep concern about the Waqf Amendment Bill. He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Center is trying to capture the assets of Muslims in the country through this bill. He also described this law as another link for the alleged harassment on Muslims for the last decade.
‘BJP’s agenda against Muslims’
Mehbooba Mufti said, “The campaign that the BJP has launched against Muslims for the last 10 years is part of the same. Now by bringing the Waqf Amendment Bill, they are targeting our religious properties. Our country was known for Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb and brotherhood, but now it is being broken.”
He further said, “The BJP forgets that power is not there forever. The path on which they are taking the country, the whole country will pay the whole country. The government today is openly violating the rights of Muslims, which is against the basic principles of our democracy.”
Appeal for justice from majority
Mehbooba Mufti also appealed to Hindu majority to raise their voice against this injustice. He said, “India is a country of all citizens, irrespective of religion or faith. We should follow Gandhiji’s principles and ensure that the country goes according to the Constitution.”
Warning given by giving an example of Myanmar
Mehbooba gave the example of Myanmar on the increasing threat of communalism in India and warned that India should not follow the path where centralization and repression of power is common. He appealed to all communities to unite to protect equal rights and respect, comparing the current status of Muslims with the historical struggles of Kashmiri Pandits.
‘BJP is trying to break the country’
In her statement, Mehbooba Mufti said, “BJP is working to break the social and religious fabric of this country. If we want India to remain a country of unity and harmony, then we have to oppose these divisive policies.”
He also urged the Hindu society to raise his voice against this bill and stop the BJP from dividing the country in the name of religion and caste.
