Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a bizarre case, the department of public health and medical education has sought guidance in an investigation against Dr Alka Gupta from the principal of the Government Dental College, who happens to be Dr Gupta herself.

A letter dated January 30 from the deputy director (legal) has raised serious concerns about the fairness of the probe. It addresses procedural issues in the inquiry against Dr Gupta, the head of the prosthodontics department, while asking her for guidance in the matter as she is the principal of the college as well Dr Gupta is under investigation for alleged irregularities in her appointment and roster management.

The inquiry was initiated after a complaint filed by Dr Subhash Sonkesariya, associate professor in the same department, was officially acknowledged on January 2.

Complaint against Dr Gupta

Dr Sonkesariyaís complaint states that Dr Gupta was appointed as a resident in dentistry at Government Dental College, Indore, on April 2, 1990, despite lacking the required MDS qualification. In 1998, she was appointed as a lecturer in conservative dentistry on the condition that she complete her MDS within five years.

However, she obtained the degree in 2005, violating the terms of her appointment. Despite this, no action was taken due to administrative negligence.

Additionally, instead of completing her MDS in conservative dentistry as required, Dr Gupta obtained the degree in prosthodontics and was later transferred to the prosthodontics departmentóan unauthorized move under government regulations. The complaint alleges that these actions were arbitrary and violated official rules.
