Mira-Bhayandar: An African national from Ghana has been arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) attached to the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police after he was found to be in possession of drugs including mephedrone (MD) and cocaine collectively worth more than Rs 26 lakh.
About The Case
A patrolling unit from the ANC spotted the African national loitering in suspicious circumstances opposite in the Vijay Lakshmi area of Vasai (east) on Monday night. The ANC took him into custody and upon frisking he was found to be in possession of more than one kilogram MD valued at Rs 20.99 lakh and 17.3 grams cocaine worth Rs 5.19 lakh in the international market.
The accused who has been identified as Albert Opoku is originally a resident of Ghana – a unitary country in West Africa who was currently staying in Vasai. He failed to produce any documents including passport and visa to authorise his stay in the country.
Contraband Seized
The police seized the contraband and registered an offence against Albert at the Achole police station under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and section 14(a) of the Foreigners Act of 1946 which deals with the penalties for entering the country without a permit or valid documents. While Albert was remanded to custody investigations were on to ascertain the source of the drugs and potential buyers.
