The sanitation department attached to the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has rolled out a five-week long “Clean Toilets Campaign” to transform and upgrade all public and community loos across the twin-city with a focus on cleaning, maintenance and beautification. The MBMC will also conduct a survey to map the footfall of users at public toilets located in busy areas.
The campaign, which is being conducted in adherence to directions issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), took off on 19, November (World Toilet Day) and will continue till 25, December (Good Governance Day) 2024. While the main focus will be on Functioning, Accessibility, Cleanliness, Eco-Friendliness and Safety (FACES), the sanitation personnel will conduct transparent evaluation, corrective action, operation and maintenance in compliance with parameters.

This apart from fixing accountabilities on concerned sanitation inspectors for toilet blocks falling in their respective zones and also taking feedbacks from users. Notably, the civic administration has added an additional component to the campaign in the form of footfall mapping at select locations, the data of which can be used to gauge the number of people using a public toilet and determine any kind of steps which were needed to be taken in order to augment existing facilities.
Highlighting the importance of sanitation and sustainable solutions for proper toilet infrastructure, municipal commissioner, Sanjay Katkar said, “We are committed to ensure clean, safe and accessible public/community toilets for people and this campaign will help us evaluate and take corrective measures.”
There are around 191 public/community toilet blocks having more than 3,800 toilet seats, constructed by MBMC’s Public Works Department (PWD) in various slum pockets and public places across the twin-city.
