Mumbai: After the citizens’ protest against the 23-stoyered robotic parking tower outside Matunga Central Railway station saw success as the BMC officially informed the citizens on May 21 that the project has been foreclosed, the citizens activists are firm to continue their movement against proposed parking towers in Mumbai.

Activists from the Petition Group- GR Vora, Kamlakar Shenoy and Chetan Trivedi who have been at the forefront highlighting violations in the Matunga parking tower project, said the parking tower at Worli and Hutatma chowk are nothing but waste of public money. “The projects not only lack permissions but are floated at escalated cost. Hundreds of crores of public money is wasted in such projects and we are firm to continue our movement against the BMC and some of its corrupt officers,” said trustee of Petition Group Kamlakar Shenoy.

The FPJ had reported on November 29, 2024 that the BMC has undertaken the multi-level robotic parking tower (MRPT) project, which includes four parking towers across the city. The project costs Rs 504.19 crore.

The four locations for the MRPTs included BMC’s Engineering Hub at Worli, near Mumbadevi Temple in Kalbadevi, opposite Matunga Central railway station and Hutatma Chowk (Apsara) near Bombay High Court.

Notably, the work of parking tower near Mumbadevi temple is already on hold after objections raised by the temple trust.

“We are glad we could save the road for public as the parking tower project outside Matunga Central Railway station is scrapped. But the question remains, how Rs 100 crore was sanctioned in 2021 and work order given in 2022 but the NOCs from Railways was obtained in November 2024? The sequence of events points out at corruption at the higher level at the cost public safety,” alleged Shenoy.

Shenoy said that a public interest litigation is already filed against the Robot parking tower at Worli and work at Hutatma chowk was halted after he created public outcry by recording spot videos showing violations.
