South African cricketer Matthew Breetzke has broken a 47-year-old record for scoring the most runs on ODI debut as he made a whirlwind 150 against New Zealand on Monday in the tri-series fixture at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Breetzke broke former West Indian opener Desmond Haynes’ record when he scored 148 on debut in 1978.

The right-handed batter also joined Colin Ingram as the only South African player to score a century on ODI debut as he got to the three-figure mark with a boundary. He also got to 150 with a six before Matt Henry got the better of him immediately after he reached the landmark. The dressing room were inevitably buoyant by his achievement and the coach congratulated him when the 26-year-old went there after being dismissed.
