Rishikesh: Thousands of tourists visit Rishikesh in Uttarakhand every year, also known as the Yoga capital of the country. The purpose of visit for some are spiritual while the youngsters generally visit for adventure and indulge in activities like river rafting and bungee jumping. However, the safety measures for river rafting has always been at question. A tragic incident has come to light from Munikireti area of Rishikesh in Tehri district on Wednesday, in which a young man from Dehradun died during rafting which started from Shivpuri.
The incident took place when raft carrying several individuals suddenly started shaking and one of the tourist onboard lost balance and fell in the Ganga river near Garud Chatti bridge. The deceased has been identified as Sagar Negi. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
In the video, Sagar can be seen trying to use the paddles and get back on the raft and the people sitting on the raft can also be seen going close to him to get him back onboard. However, the river current was so strong that the man could not be saved.
Sagar’s body was taken out of the Ganga river by the rescue team. The police then sent the body for postmortem and further action is being taken.
Tapovan outpost in-charge Pradeep Rawat said that a detailed investigation of the incident is ongoing. Meanwhile, the administration has appealed to the tourists to strictly follow all the safety instructions during rafting.
