The Chitalsar Police arrested a man for allegedly attacking his wife with an iron pipe and attempting to set her on fire over divorce issues in Thane on Tuesday, police said.
The accused has been identified as Vikram Bhoir, 35, a driver by profession who lives in Vikhroli, while his wife resides at her maternal home in Thane. Police stated that the couple had been married for seven years but had been separated for the last two years. The victim had filed a divorce petition in court.
The incident occurred near the Borivali tunnel, within the jurisdiction of the Chitalsar Manpada police station, at around 9:30 AM when the victim was on her way home. The accused allegedly approached her, attacked her with an iron pipe, and then attempted to set her on fire. Following the victim’s complaint, police registered an FIR.
According to the police, the victim sought a divorce from Bhoir, but he refused to grant it. He had also skipped a court hearing scheduled two days earlier. Bystanders who rushed to the scene found the woman lying on the road with burn injuries after being attacked. She was immediately taken to a hospital.
Sunil Warude, senior police inspector from Chitalsar Manpada police station, said, “The victim was admitted to the hospital with 50% burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment. We have arrested Bhoir based on his wife’s complaint. A case has been registered under charges of attempted murder and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is ongoing.”
