Trinamool Congress on Tuesday: Demanding to change the name of Bengal to ‘Bangla’, he said that this name reflects the history and culture of the state. Raising this issue during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Trinamool Congress member Ritabrat Banerjee said that the West Bengal Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a proposal to change the state’s name in July 2018, but the Center has not yet approved it.
He said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that this nomenclature is in line with the history, culture and identity of the state and also shows the aspirations of the people here.

Bengal was partitioned in 1947. The Indian part was named West Bengal and the second part was named East Pakistan. In 1971, East Pakistan announced independence and Bangladesh became a new nation. Banerjee said that there is no East Pakistan today. ‘Our state should be named. The mandate of the people of West Bengal should be respected. The last name of the state was changed in 2011, when Orissa’s name was changed to Odisha.

He said that the names of many cities have been changed in the last few years. It also includes Bombay, which was renamed Mumbai in 1995, Madras was renamed Chennai in 1996, Calcutta was renamed Kolkata in 2001 and Bangalore was renamed in 2014 to Bengaluru.
