Mumbai: Malayalam film industry makers, distributors and cinema owners have threatened to shut down the film industry from June next year. According to him, the film industry is currently going through an unprecedented financial crisis and they cannot wait anymore. They are opposing excessive fees charged by film actors and heavy entertainment tax levied by the government. Recently a meeting of the Malayalam filmmaker, distributor, cinema owner and Technician Association (FEFKA) was held. After this meeting, producer G Suresh Kumar said that more than 200 films will be released in 2024. Only 24 of these films have been released. The producers have suffered a loss of Rs 600 to 700 crores due to all other films flopped.
He said that the production cost has increased manifold due to excessive fees charged by artists.
He also said that the film industry is facing double burden of GST and entertainment tax. Now, the total tax, including these two, is about 30 percent. If a film earns 100 crores, then the government takes Rs 30 crore and the manufacturer gets only Rs 27 crore.
