Mumbai: The special session of the Maharashtra Legislature concluded on Monday, showcasing a series of significant developments. The session featured a trust vote for the government, the election of Rahul Narwekar as the Assembly Speaker, and an address by Governor CP Radhakrishnan. This marked his first address since the formation of the new government.
About The Ambitious Economic Vision
Governor Radhakrishnan outlined an ambitious economic vision: Making Maharashtra the first state in India to achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2027-28. He emphasised the state’s leading role as a preferred destination for foreign investment, underscoring that Maharashtra contributed over 14% of India’s GDP.
In fiscal year 2023-24, the state led the nation in FDI with Rs1,25,101 crore, continuing its dominance in the first half of 2024-25, securing Rs1,13,236 crore – over 90% of the previous year’s total. The Governor also detailed government initiatives for job creation. A policy has been launched to grant anchor industry status to mega-projects and high-tech sectors, such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, aerospace, defense, and steel. These projects, approved in the past eight months, are set to attract Rs 3,29,000 crore in investment and create approximately 1,18,000 jobs.
About Govt’s Push For Digital Innovation
The government’s push for digital innovation includes a new Green Data Center policy aimed at establishing Mumbai as India’s data center capital. This initiative promises an investment of Rs1 lakh crore and will create 20,000 jobs through green data center parks in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Governor Radhakrishnan also highlighted the continuation of the “Chief Minister Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana for women aged 21 to 65, although the Rs2,100 financial aid promised during the election was not addressed.
Additionally, the “Chief Minister Baliraja Free Power Scheme-2024” was introduced to offer free electricity to over 46 lakh farmers. The address covered various farmer welfare programs, support for fishermen, educational reforms, and policies for women, signaling the government’s ambitious agenda. It remains to be seen how these initiatives will unfold in the coming months.
