Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan Inaugurates Revamped Traffic Island Adopted By HSNC University |
In a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability and beautification of urban spaces, HSNC University, Mumbai has adopted a traffic island near its Worli campus and transformed it into a green haven. The island has been meticulously spruced up with a lush green lawn, lots of trees and plants, a water fountain and vibrant, colourful lights that illuminate the space at night, making it a stunning visual landmark in the area. The beautification of the traffic island is part of HSNC University’s ongoing green initiatives aimed at enhancing the surrounding community’s ecological health and aesthetic appeal.
The newly revamped traffic island was inaugurated by Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, Shri CP Radhakrishnanji, who commended the University for its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The event also witnessed the presence of Dr. Niranjan Hiranandani, Provost, HSNC University; Col. Dr. Hemlata K. Bagla, Vice Chancellor, HSNC University; Mr. Anil Harish, President & Trustee, HSNC Board; Dr. Kishu Mansukhani, Trustee & immediate Past President, HSNC Board; distinguished members from the academic community; local authorities and students, all of whom celebrated this landmark moment.
On the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony, Provost Dr. Niranjan Hiranandani affirmed “This is a small but significant step in transforming our urban landscapes into more livable, greener spaces. It is essential for educational institutions to lead by example in creating environmental awareness and contributing to the well-being of the community.”
Dr. Hemlata K. Bagla, Vice-Chancellor of HSNC University pledged, “This traffic island transformation is just one of many steps we are taking as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability. We believe that educational institutions must not only focus on academic excellence but also contribute meaningfully to the well-being of the society around them. This green initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to foster a greener, cleaner future for Mumbai.”
This initiative aligns with HSNC University’s broader vision of creating green spaces that contribute to both environmental sustainability and the quality of life for citizens in Mumbai. The newly spruced-up island now serves as both a peaceful green retreat and a visual attraction, drawing attention not only during the day but also at night when it is beautifully lit with colorful lights, adding a touch of magic to a busy junction which connects to the coastal road leading into South Mumbai. It also contributes to better air quality and offers a peaceful respite in the otherwise bustling city.
Key Features of the Green Initiative:
Lawn and Greenery: The traffic island has been adorned with fresh, thriving greenery and well-maintained lawns, ensuring it acts as a small but vital green lung in the city.
Water Fountain: A new water fountain has been installed, adding an element of serenity to the space while also improving the aesthetics and promoting environmental balance.
Sustainability: The initiative is in line with HSNC University’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental footprint and encourage sustainable practices within the local community.
The adoption of this traffic island at Worli (where Flora, a popular Cantonese restaurant used to stand a few years back) is part of HSNC University’s continued efforts to engage in community development and environmental consciousness. The University plans to expand these green initiatives in the coming years, creating more such spaces around the city to improve the urban ecosystem.
A resident of the nearby Venus Apartments, Ms. Swati Shah, also shared her thoughts on the transformation. “This traffic island was always an overlooked, barren space. But now, it has completely changed the feel of the area. The greenery, fountain and especially the lights at night make it such a peaceful and pleasant sight. It’s like a little oasis in the middle of the city. I’m really happy to see HSNC University take this step and it makes me proud to live near such a thoughtful initiative,” she said, smiling as she gazed at the newly revamped island.
