Maharashtra government issues stern warning to PWD engineers for neglecting construction project inspections | Representational Image
Mumbai: After noticing that engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD) were not taking its directions seriously, the state government warned of disciplinary action if they failed to inspect project work and submit their reports.
According to a circular issued by the PWD on August 16 last year, the engineers were asked to pay periodic visits to the under-construction buildings, roads, and bridges. The circular contains guidelines for supervising the works carried out by the PWD, and clause 2 specifically mentions visits for inspections and submission of reports to the government.
After concluding that the engineers were not taking the circular seriously, the state department in Mantralaya issued a stern warning through another circular issued on Tuesday. It says the engineers should take the instructions issued by the government seriously and to ensure the quality of construction the chief engineer, superintending engineer, and the executive engineers should pay periodic visits to the road, bridges, and building works periodically.
All the chief engineers, the superintending engineers, and the executive engineers from the respective regions must pay visits to inspect the works at the project sites twice a week and submit reports as well, the government has said. The chief engineer has been directed to submit reports to the state government on the 5th of every month in a suggested format.
If failed, the concerned engineers will face disciplinary action, the government has warned. But, according to sources from Mantralaya, the state circular appears to be a desperate move since the engineers have been duty-bound to pay visits to the project works and submit reports. If they are not doing their jobs despite the government directives it becomes a serious issue.
