Maharashtra celebrated Shiv Jayanti on February 19 to commemorate the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who established Hindavi Swaraj after freeing large areas from the rule of the Deccan sultanates.
Citizens, celebrities, and political leaders sent messages recalling the king’s rebellion against the political powers of the day. In a message on ‘X’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: I pay homage to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti. His valour and visionary leadership laid the foundation for Swarajya, inspiring generations to uphold the values of courage and justice. He inspires us in building a strong, self-reliant and prosperous India.’
In Mumbai, programmes were held at the memorials to the king at Shivaji Park, Gateway of India, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation celebrated the birth anniversary as Shiv Jayanti Utsav. Maharashtra’s Governor, C P Radhakrishnan, paid floral tributes to the equestrian statue of the king at Dadar’s Shivaji Maharaj Maidan.

The event featured performances by the BMC’s Music and Arts Academy, showcasing powadas and devotional songs based on Shivaji’s life. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani presided over the event.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Ashwini Joshi, Chairman of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Smarak Samiti, Kisan Jadhav, and others were present at the occasion.Prominent attendees included Minister of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Mangal Prabhat Lodha, local MPs, and MLAs who celebrated Shivaji’s legacy as the founder of the Maratha empire and a symbol of Maratha pride, who promoted the Marathi language and culture during his reign.
At a programme the Gateway of India, organised by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Smarak Samiti, Maharashtra assembly speaker, and local MLA Rahul Narvekar paid homage to Shivaji’s equestrian statue.The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti announced a programme to clean and conserve nearly 350 forts associated with Shivaji.

The group has asked citizens, especially the youth to sign up for the ‘Ek Divas Shivrayancha Sannidhyat’ where they can gather at a fort for a day of cleaning and conservation of the forts. “Before we visit the fort, we will inform the local authorities, take the volunteers there and clean the place. We will ask a historian to participate and tell the gathering the story of the fort. This will continue during 2025,” said Ramesh Shinde, national spokesperson.
The Mumbai Dabbawala Association celebrated the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with great enthusiasm at their Dadar and Grant Road offices.
