The Maharashtra government has approved the establishment of a new government Unani college in the Raigad district. The college, with a capacity of 100 students, will be located in Raigad district and affiliated with a 100-bed hospital.
This decision comes as the state currently has only seven Unani colleges, with no government-run institutions. The new college aims to address this gap and provide increased access to Unani medicine education in the region.
Out of the seven Unani colleges in Maharashtra, three are government-aided and four are private unaided. The total student admission capacity of these seven colleges is 420.
To ensure the college meets the standards set by the Central Council of Indian Medicine, the government will temporarily make existing hospitals in Raigad district available to the Medical Education and Drugs Department for at least three years.
This will allow the new college to meet the requirement of having a functioning hospital for a year before commencing operations.
The establishment of this new government Unani college is expected to boost the availability of skilled Unani practitioners in Maharashtra and enhance the accessibility of traditional medicine to the people of the state.
