Maha Shivratri, also known as “The Great Night of Shiva,” is one of the most significant Hindu festivals, celebrated with deep devotion and spiritual fervour. Observed annually on the 14th night of the lunar month of Phalguna or Magha, the festival is marked by fasting, meditation, and prayers dedicated to Lord Shiva. This year, Maha Shivratri holds special significance as it coincides with a rare cosmic event occurring after six decades.

When is Maha Shivratri 2025?
Maha Shivratri 2025 will be observed on Wednesday, February 26. The most auspicious time for the Nishita Kaal Puja, the midnight worship of Lord Shiva, is scheduled between 12:09 AM and 12:59 AM on February 27. The fasting rituals, known as Shivaratri Parana, will be concluded between 6:48 AM and 8:54 AM on the same day, as per Drik Panchang.
Rare planetary conjunction after 60 years
This year’s Maha Shivratri is particularly extraordinary due to a rare planetary alignment that was last witnessed in 1965. As per astrologers, a conjunction of three planets will take place, forming special planetary yogas like Trigrahi Yoga and Budhaditya Yoga. These celestial events are believed to amplify the spiritual energy of the occasion, making it an opportune moment for devotees to seek Lord Shiva’s divine blessings.
Renowned astrologer Dr. Acharya Sushant Raj has highlighted that this is only the second time since 1965 that Maha Shivratri will occur on February 26 under the influence of Dhanishta Nakshatra, Parigha Yoga, Shakuni Karan, and the Capricorn Moon, as reported by Jagran. Additionally, this alignment of celestial bodies will create a highly auspicious environment for spiritual seekers performing the four Prahar Sadhna on this night.
The last time such an event took place, the Sun, Mercury, and Saturn were positioned in Aquarius, marking a significant period in Hindu astrology. Those engaging in dedicated Shiva Sadhna during this cosmic alignment are believed to receive immense spiritual and material benefits.
Significance of Maha Shivratri 2025
Apart from its religious importance, Maha Shivratri serves as a night of deep spiritual awakening. Devotees chant Om Namah Shivaya, perform abhishekam (ritual bathing of the Shiva Lingam), and observe strict fasts to purify their minds and souls. It is believed that sincere devotion and meditation on this sacred night bring peace, prosperity, and liberation from past karmas.
