A luxury BMW car caught fire on the Jogeshwari East-West bridge on Monday afternoon while in motion. The driver quickly exited the vehicle upon noticing smoke, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the incident led to a significant traffic jam, causing delays for about two hours. In a separate incident the previous night, three cars, including another BMW, were engulfed in flames while parked on the Andheri Link Road.

As per fire officials, the incident occurred around 1:30 pm on Monday in Jogeshwari, when a driver from a service center was transporting a BMW to the workshop. While on the East-West bridge, the car suddenly caught fire. The driver quickly noticed smoke and managed to exit the vehicle, avoiding injury. A quick response vehicle and a water tanker from the Goregaon Fire station were immediately rushed to the spot.

Santosh Ingole, Senior Station Officer of Goregaon Fire Station, stated, “Traffic police assisted us in navigating through the heavy traffic, and by the time we reached the spot, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. We quickly got to work and managed to douse the fire.” Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident caused significant traffic disruption. The traffic was diverted to an alternate route while the fire brigade worked to extinguish the flames. The bridge was cleared for traffic after 2:30 pm, once the vehicle was towed from the site.

“Prima facie, the vehicle caught fire due to a short circuit,” said Ingole. In a similar incident the previous night, three vehicles caught fire around 9:30 pm near Butterfly Restaurant in Jogeshwari West. “One of the three vehicles, a BMW, which had been parked on the roadside after servicing, suddenly caught fire. The flames quickly spread, engulfing a WagonR and a Maruti Suzuki Swift. The flames were quickly doused, and fortunately, no injuries were reported,” said fire official.
