Luigi Mangione, who is alleged to have shot dead UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson had a meltdown of sorts on Wednesday (December 11) when he was being taken to a courthouse in Pennsylvania. Mangione, began yelling at the media near the entrance of the courthouse building.

“It’s completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people. It’s lived experience!” he yelled as reported by US media.

The videos of the incident shows Mangione shouting at the media before being stopped by police officials who pushed him inside the court building.

Mangione has been charged with murder by prosecutors in New York. In Blair House County court in Pennsylvania, he was opposing an extradition to New York. The 26-year-old was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania on Monday.

After his eventual extradition to New York, Mangione will face one count of murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The Murder And Aftermath

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot dead on December 4 when he was on the way to attend investors’ conference in New York. CCTV cameras caught the killing and Mangione was recognised from the footage.

He went on the run after the murder and was arrested in Pennsylvania after a McDonald’s employee recognised him from media images and called the police. It has been reported in local media that McDonald’s employee asked Mangione if he had been to New York recently. He gave a startled reaction which made the staffer sure about his identity.

Mangione comes from a wealthy family and is an Ivy League graduate. It is not yet clear why he killed Thompson but the crime is being viewed through the lens of collective anger against US health insurance industry which has high rate of claims denial.
