Bhopal: The Government of Madhya Pradesh has taken an important decision from a historical and social perspective. Under the new liquor policy under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, completely liquor ban has been imposed in 17 religious cities of the state from April 1. The main objective is to protect religious and cultural values behind this decision.
Now liquor will not be found in these 17 religious cities
The list of religious cities announced by the state government is included:
- Ujjain
- Datia
- Emerald
- Mandsaur
- Mandla
- Multai
- Maihar
- Omkareshwar
- Maheshwar
- Orchha
- Chitrakoot
- Amarkantak
- Salkanpur
- Burman art
- Burman Khurd
- Kundalpur
- Bandakpur
In all these places, there will be a complete ban on the sale of liquor not only in liquor shops, but also in hotels and restaurants.
17 liquor shops will be closed in Ujjain
This decision holds special significance in Ujjain, the city of Baba Mahakal. 17 liquor shops will be closed here, while liquor will not be sold in 11 hotels and restaurants. This step in a religious city like Ujjain reflects the government’s commitment to religious values.
Cabinet was seal, shops will not be shifted
This major decision was taken at the cabinet meeting held in Maheshwar in January 2025. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav had clearly stated that the shops which will be closed will not be transferred to some other place. It will be a complete and permanent captive.
Rules will also apply on the banks of river Narmada
Apart from religious cities, no type of liquor sale will be allowed within a radius of five-five kilometers of both banks of the Narmada River. This step has been taken with the aim of maintaining the religious and cultural sanctity of the Narmada River.
Full ban in Datia, Panna and Amarkantak
- Datia: This city will be completely alcohol free due to the famous Pitambara Peeth located here.
- Amarkantak: Due to the origin of the Narmada River, there is special religious significance here, so complete prohibition has been implemented.
- Emerald: Alcohol will no longer sell at this place important from religious and cultural perspective.
Support also received from cities like Mandsaur, Maihar, Maheshwar
Local people had long demanded prohibition at these religious places. Mandsaur has an ancient temple of Lord Pashupatinath, while Maihar is famous as the city of Mata Sharda. Maheshwar, which is a religious and cultural heritage located on the banks of Narmada, has also appreciated this decision.
Government’s move a new beginning
This decision of the state government is being considered a major step towards social reforms, conservation of religious beliefs and protecting cultural heritage. Although some business classes may be affected by this, this decision to give priority to religious importance has been taken in the widespread interest of the people.
