LGBTQ Activists March From Mahatma Phule Wada To Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue Near Pune Station On Ambedkar Jayanti | FPJ

Yutak LGBTQ Trust Pune organised a tribute march in honour of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Monday from Mahatma Phule Wada to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar statue near Pune Station. Around 19 people participated in the foot march. Many participants shared their opinions about their struggle for a place in the society.

Speaking to The Free Press Journal, Mayur Patare, a member of Yutak LGBTQ Trust, said, “This is a tribute to Dr Ambedkar’s inclusive and visionary work. He contributed to social justice and equality. He inspired not only the LGBTQ community but also many other backward classes and minority people. However, still, we are an ignorant part of the community and have yet to get the same equality as others. The society is changing their mindset but it will take time to accept completely. As we can see in the government jobs and the government seats, the people from the LGBTQ community are very less in number. These numbers are required to increase and get an equal chance in each sector of the government department.”

Anil Ukarande, founder of Yutak LGBTQ Trust, highlighted the principles of equality and liberty in the Constitution. “The movements of the marginalised and LGBTQ minority communities can achieve their rights only through the democratic path shown by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Our struggle is inspired by the ideals of Babasaheb Ambedkar, accordingly by stepping on his insights, we will achieve our rights in future.”

Vaidehi Varhade, a transgender activist highlighted, “Without any unconstitutional struggle today the transgender people are getting their legal identity because of the law of discrimination and injustice made by Babasaheb. We can fight for our rights because of these rights mentioned in the Constitution. People need to learn and know their rights, accordingly in society they can make their place.”

Teju Punekar, a social activist and member of LGBTQ community, added, “LGBTQ community had not got their rights to work in every field. People are getting benefits through various government schemes but for the transgender community still nothing has been done by the government. Politicians need to pay attention to our community.”
