Lesbian Visibility Week is a powerful celebration of identity, pride, and community. It shines a light on lesbian experiences, ensuring that women-loving-women are seen, heard, and valued in society. It is annually celebrated on April 26.
Lesbian Visibility Week began in 2020 in the United Kingdom, initiated by DIVA, Europe’s leading magazine for LGBTQIA women and non-binary people. The event was created to not only celebrate lesbians but to also offer solidarity to all women in the LGBTQIA community, especially those who feel marginalised. Founder, Linda Riley, wanted to amplify the voices of lesbians who are often overlooked, even within broader queer movements.

here's a thread of links to charities/organisations that support lesbians & women (+others).
as we take pride in the fight that brought us here, we mustn't forget nor neglect the many of us that are not safe, and face abuse +/ persecution. pic.twitter.com/xUj5WA651l— maisy ⚢ (@dykeappeal) April 26, 2025

What it stands for?
At its core, Lesbian Visibility Week is about recognition, celebration, and solidarity. It aims to showcase the diversity within the lesbian community, highlighting women of different races, abilities, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The week also works to dismantle stereotypes and advocate for more inclusive representation across media, politics, and workplaces.
“Growing up, I barely saw anyone like me in the movies or on TV. Lesbian Visibility Week reminds me that I’m not invisible- I’m part of something powerful,” shares a college student, Oliviya Das.
It’s #LesbianVisibilityDay. Representation in TV & the arts helps us feel seen, heard, and valid. Every story told makes space for more. Representation like #Kacy and #Mafin is powerful. We’re here, we’re visible.

Challenges and the power of expression
Despite progress, lesbians around the world continue to face discrimination, erasure, and barriers to self-expression. Lesbian Visibility Week brings attention to these struggles while celebrating resilience and authenticity. “Coming out was just the beginning. Finding spaces where I could be my whole self took much longer,” says advocate and artist Maya Ferrywalla.
happy lesbian visibility day to all lesbians, and especially to those of us in places where it is dangerous to be ourselves. visibility is not always about being seen by the world, sometimes it is enough to be visible to the one who loves you

Events during the week range from panel discussions and workshops to social media campaigns and community gatherings, all designed to amplify lesbian voices and experiences.
Visibility matters because representation inspires change. Lesbian Visibility Week ensures that lesbians- in all their diversity-are celebrated, supported, and empowered to live authentically every day of the year.
