Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a visit to Sri Lanka after a visit to Thailand. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has appealed to the Prime Minister to raise the issue of Kachchathivu island in front of Sri Lanka. The island has long been the subject of dispute between India and Sri Lanka.
Kuthathivu: Historical Background
Kachchathivu is a small island, located in the Pakistani Strait between India and Sri Lanka. In 1974, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi handed over the island to Sri Lanka. Since then it has remained a controversial issue between India and Sri Lanka.
Chief Minister Stalin says that the Tamil Nadu fishermen have been constantly facing the Sri Lankan Navy actions after being handed over to the island. Many times fishermen are arrested, and their boats are confiscated, causing a crisis on their livelihood.
Demand for intervention from Prime Minister
Stalin has urged Prime Minister Modi to interact directly on the issue with the President and other officials of Sri Lanka. He said, “Raw has become a question of life-death for fishermen. The Prime Minister should give the issue top priority and need to take concrete steps to protect the interests of fishermen.”
Current status of dispute
The Tamil Nadu government and especially DMK have been constantly saying that the Government of India should find a permanent solution to the issue. The state government argues that until this issue is resolved, the fishermen of Tamil Nadu will remain insecure and will have to face uncertainty every day.
